This badge is a reminder of what good Christian Americans did to their fellow men. In the 1850's plantation owners created runaway slave patrols to stem the losses they were suffering because of the Underground Railroad. Slaves that were caught were sometimes treated mercilessly to make an example to other slaves. At best many were branded, disfigured, beaten and whipped. This badge is a reminder of how people who cherished their freedom more than anything else, took the freedom of many others who were helpless to stop it.
